We, like you, are animal-lovers who want to help.

Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (Friends) is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, fundraising partner of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (Shelter). With the support of many pet-loving donors and volunteers, Friends funds important needs beyond what the Shelter’s budget can provide. Please join us in the Shelter’s effort to ensure every shelter pet is offered the best opportunity to find a loving forever home.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter (Shelter) is Fairfax County’s only open-access animal shelter, serving a community of 1.1 million people spread over 400 square miles.

The Shelter takes in owner-surrendered companion animals, stray animals in need, and animals who have been seized or taken into custody by Animal Protection Police. The Shelter accepts all companion animals from Fairfax County who need help, regardless of health, age, temperament, or history; the Shelter does not euthanize for lack of space or length of time.

Shelter staff is comprised of three teams: Customer Care, Outreach, and Animal Care. In addition, the Shelter has a vibrant volunteer and foster program, which allows the Shelter staff to extend the Shelter’s capacity for care beyond the its walls.
